Man!! zipslack info is kind of dated, eh??

http://www.slackware.com/zipslack/install.php
"Boot Windows 95 and start your unzip utility."

That's folders or directories.

There is something wrong with your CD if there is no zipslack.zip in the zipslack folder and no zip files in the split folder.

Zipslack can be downloaded online.

Zipslack provides a nice set of console (text only) tools that can be unzipped onto a FAT filesystem (not NTFS) and booted from DOS. Just unzip the zip file and check the LINUX.BAT file for correct partition to boot.

No, you can't run Zipslack under Windows- You install it on Windows, but it runs under dos.

Zipslack is fine if you want to try out slackware without carving up your partitions. But you'll only get a command-line- no X windows unless you install those packages yourself which is a pretty big job for a newby.

The file you were looking for is probably not on your CD so you need to download it if you want to try it. It's a 40 MB zip file, and once you get the correct file it's totally easy to install, like you said- just unzip it to C:\ and there you have a perfect linux installation
.
To boot it up, you have to close down windows and get into dos. From dos, you pass your boot parameters to loadlin.

Or you can create a boot floppy disk if you have trouble with loadlin.

If you want a full-featured system, it's probably worth your time to forget zipslack and create yourself a native linux partition so you can do a full install. Good Luck!

Read my HOWTO for building a great system based on ZipSlack. I run X and Opera 7.22, ROX-Filer and lots of other goodies (installs in about 150MB). Zipslack is an easy way to start a system and can be easily copied to a linux native partition if you wish.
I'm waiting for space on ibiblio to upload my AMIGO Linux distros (versions based on Slackware 8.1 and 9.1).

I am also re-editing the above HOWTO. I recently achieved a minimal install of only 20MB, and an install with KDE of just 240MB.

Gnashley-

Thanks for posting that how-to. It would have saved me a lot of time a couple years back when I was using zip & bigslack.

Everytime slackware puts out a new distro, I use zipslack to give it a trial run before I update. When 9.1 came out, I tried to use zipslack (with development packages added) to compile a 2.6 kernel- It turns out that the 2.6 kernel has busted the umsdos file system, and from what I've read, they won't have it fixed anytime soon. Maybe the slack developers will try to resurrect it if they plan to include support for it in their stock kernels.

BTW- In Group V bootloaders, you left out the best bootloader of all: grub. It boots zipslack just fine. I like grub because with lilo, I had trouble booting concurrent versions of slackware- Lilo sometimes would boot the wrong kernel. Grub requires more parameters to boot, but it can differentiate better between a 2.2 and a 2.4 kernel. Besides, you don't have to reinstall it every time you update the kernel- just edit the menu file and you're done!
