/etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is just a symlink to xinitrc.kde . As i dont use KDE, i dont have that file & using an .Xresources instead of an .Xdefaults doesnt work.

Code:
ll /etc/X11/xinit
total 4.0K
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 321 2003-03-16 23:36 README.Xmodmap
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root  11 2008-09-12 06:08 xinitrc -> xinitrc.kde
.Xresources doesnt work this way

Can you try doing a "xrdb -merge $HOME/.Xresources"

I can't see any reason for ~/.Xresources not to work... afaik it is independent of WM

Man X shows:
Code:
XENVIRONMENT
Any user- and machine-specific resources may be specified by
setting the XENVIRONMENT environment variable to the name of a
resource file to be loaded by all applications. If this vari-
able is not defined, a file named $HOME/.Xdefaults-hostname is
looked for instead, where hostname is the name of the host
               where the application is executing.

XENVIRONMENT
This must point to a file containing X resources. The default is
              $HOME/.Xdefaults-<hostname>. Unlike /usr/lib/X11/Xresources, it
is consulted each time an X application starts.
So I would think that .Xresources files are like .bash_profile and .Xdefaults are like .bashrc

This is what I do to get the colours in the output from ls when run in a bash shell, based on a suggestion from rworkman in an old post that I haven't been able to find.
Create a .bashrc file in your home directory and add this line
Quote:
. /etc/profile.d/coreutils-dircolors.sh

It works but i have to merge everytime. .Xdefaults work out of the box
