xorg.conf Slackware 12.2 T22 Savage Drivers

Hi,
My apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to enter this note.

I'm running Slackware 12.2 on an old T22. It has a savage video chip. I was having a problem that whenever I exited X11, or used <ctl><alt><Fn>, the X system would hang and the screen would go black. Sometimes I could see a brief instance of text from the terminal. Only a power cycle would bring the computer back.

Checking /var/log/Xorg.0.log, there were no errors being reported by X11.
The nice thing about the new X system is that it generally autodetects everything, so no configuration is necessary. At least in most cases, so I ran xorgconfig, and got a simple xorg.conf file. This performed more poorly than the autodetect method.

I'd used the latest revision of Knoppix, and found the X11 behavior to be quite acceptable, with no hang-ups.

I booted to that disk, and checked to see if it had specified xorg.conf, and it did. Copying it over to the hard disk, I had to edit one line to include a driver module which Knoppix would ordinarily autodetect.
This xorg.conf is performing well, no issues with hang-ups or switching to alternate TTYs.

At some point I will dig into the configuration to see what options actually fixed my issue. In the meantime, maybe this will be helpful advice for someone.

Using xorgsetup is very easy, and I can tell you that for me, personally, it worked perfectly. I checked the manual for my monitor, etc. and it worked perfectly. No problems.
