I would strongly suggest a 2.6 kernel. That's how I got my mice (both Logitech EX110 Cordless Desktop) to work. Also I chose Explorer PS/2. It just works..

Let me clarify: I didn't have to monkey around with anything after I installed the 2.6 kernel. All I had to do was choose the correct mouse in xorgconfig. Try it, it may save you tons of time.

If you chose a 2.6 kernel from the Slackware CD/DVD, you also need to install the modules manually, if you haven't already. Only the default 2.4 kernel installs the modules for you.
It's a matter of copying the /lib/modules/<kernel-version> folder for the appropriate kernel, from the CD over to your installation. Then (reboot) or run depmod -A in a console.

Instead I would suggest installing kernel-generic, also install the source code and the modules. I have a long history with this same problem

You must install the modules in the '/extra/linux-2.6.17.13' directory of install CD/DVD.

I'm pretty sure the driver is 's3' (not 'S3', it is case sensitive).

the plot is thickining

here is what I am getting from http://www.openchrome.org/

Slackware :

* xorg-6.9 is in Slackware-current as of 14 January 2006. It is the first released version of xorg which provide support for (some) unichrome chipsets.

I am pretty sure that this is the configuration I need --
Reason:
It is the one Mandrk gave me and it works --

Section "Device"
Identifier "device1"
VendorName "VIA Technologies, Inc."
BoardName "OpenChrome"
Driver "openchrome"
Option "DPMS"
EndSection

I just can't figure out how to put the pieces to the puzzle together.

Ok then, 'openchrome' is the right driver.
