Unhappy XMMS problem : ** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp):

Hi,

I've installed Salckware on my machine, the kernal version is 2.4.20, sound card installation is proper, when I try to run any .mp3 file, its throws a dialog which says that

Couldn't open audi
Please check that:

1) you have correct output plugin selected
2) No other Programs blocking the soundcard
3) your soundcard is configured properly

and on the shell, the following message is displayed:
** WARNING **: oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Device or resource busy

I've checked that whether the device is held by any other process using
lsof | grep /dev/dsp
It is not...............

and I checked the premissions of /dev/dsp /dev/mixer and /dev/audio .......

all have read,write permissions......

I don't know what else is missiing..........

Thanks in advance,

Suresh

check lsmod (as root) to see if your sound card module is loaded.

Thumbs up

YOUR ISSUE RESOLVED!!!
I had the same problem and I have been going crazy to fix this problem for a while. The problem turned out to be the gaim!!! It seems like this application does not behave right. It blocks the audio/sound device.
run ps -e to find out about the pid of gaim and kill pid
rerun xmms, it should work

good luck.
