XFree86 4.2.0 & ATI 3D Rage IIC AGP

When I installed Slackware 8.0, XFree86 4.1.0 worked perfectly "out of the box" with my ATI 3D Rage IIC AGP card. Now I've upgraded from 8.0 to 8.1, and I can't get XFree86 4.2.0 to work. The problem is that I always get an awful long and narrow resolution: I've even tried to declare the ModeLines myself in XF86Config, but XFree86 4.2.0 seems to have a mind of its own!
When frustration finally reached the highest level, I've removed XFree86 4.2.0 and reinstalled 4.1.0 from my old Slackware 8.0, and it works perfectly again. I would like, however, to understand what the problem is.
Any suggestions?
TIA

Slackware's pre-built XF86Config file is not a product of any probing done on your hardware, its just the most generic config file that Patrick could put together. You can run the probe to create one with:

./usr/X11/bin/XFree86 -configure

And then follow the steps it gives to test it, or... make one manually with:

./usr/X11/bin/xf86config

Cheers,

Finegan
