That sounds like you're missing something that thunar loads on demand. As an example, if libjpeg is missing, then thunar will crash when you click / right-click on a jpg image.
It (rarely) happens to me, too. I also thought it was related to file types but couldn't figure out the cause. I have a full installation so I can't imagine what could be missing.
I have compiz-emerald and conky added to auto-start but no problems there.
I've also had Thunar only crash once so far been right clicking allot to try make it crash again, but it didn't happen again.
I did add Thunar archive/media-tags/thumbnailers/vcs plugins before the right click crash. Might have something to do with one of the plugins.
edit:
Okay just had it crash again. After the crash ran Thunar from terminal and got this error:
(thunar:24588): Gtk-WARNING **: A floating object was finalized. This means that someone
called g_object_unref() on an object that had only a floating
reference; the initial floating reference is not owned by anyone
and must be removed with g_object_ref_sink().
(thunar:24588): Gtk-WARNING **: Error loading theme icon 'Terminal' for stock: Icon 'Terminal' not present in theme

Reason: added info
Hi guys, I found this post. I want to ask the thunar shipped with Slackware 13.1 was compiled with the new libjpeg and maybe other libraries related to images?
