Xfce 4.6.1 ejecting an optical disc fails

Slackware64-current, xfce 4.6.1 -
If I put a disc in one of my optical drives, then copy files, look at files ---- whatever ---- on the disc, close thunar, then hit the eject button on the drive I get the following error.
Code:
Failed to eject "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_Writer_1040d".
Given device "/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/storage_model_DVD_Writer_1040d" is not a volume or drive
lsof shows no open files.

Right - clicking on the drive in thunar to eject the disc does work.

KDE and Fluxbox can eject the disc by just hitting the eject button on the drive.

Any ideas why this is?

It's an upstream bug: http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2968

There are two potential patches for it; however:
1. Neither patch is trivial (though one is closer than the other)
2. Neither patch has been approved by the Xfce team

Therefore, neither patch is terribly likely to be included here, *especially* since 13.0 is in RC status.

Jani's exo patch is the most trivial of the two, so you might try applying and seeing what kind of results you get.

Thanks for the link to the bugzilla. When I did my search, it turned up thousands of hits, but nothing concrete.

Applied this patch ( http://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=1380 ) and the eject button works - not sure if anything new is broke or not.

Wouldn't expect it. I greatly appreciate the fact that only upstream committed patches are included. This is more of an inconvenience than a bug. I laughed to myself remembering how this used to be expected behavior. Getting the eject button to actually respond was a huge step forward a few years back
Thanks!!

Well, it's not ONLY upstream-committed patches that are acceptable, but that certainly helps a lot :-)
If this had hit my radar three months ago, I would have been much more willing to "go to bat" for including that patch you applied, as there would have been time to see what (if anything) breaks because of it. At this point, however, I'm not so willing to do that.
