This thread is getting me curious I might try this on a VM to see the results.
Any noticeable changes since 4.6.0? I checked the official ChangeLog but saw that it was mainly bugfixes.
I had not tried 4.6.0, so I have no idea. I was just in a mood to try something different from KDE.
I do know one thing. if you want to change the default icon set, you are in for a tweaking good time - there aren't any more other than tango. I just haven't looked into what to do in adding icons.
Also, the documentation has not yet been written for 4.6xx, it still uses 4.4xx.
# A few tarballs have different versions; handle them here
XDT_VERS=$VERSION # xfce4-dev-tools version

THUNAR_VERS=1.0.1 # thunar version

TERM_VERS=0.2.12 # terminal version
MPAD_VERS=0.2.16 # mousepad version
I see Xfce 4.6.1 on RW's site....maybe stupid question, but is it better for some reason to uninstall 4.4.3 before installing 4.6.1? Will doing an uninstall first hose my settings, etc?
I have an issue when switching from KDE to Xfce, where Xfce will remember the images of KDE apps and impose them over the Xfce desktop background. The images can only be removed by repeatedly selecting the corrected background image until all of the ghost imaging is gone.

I've always worked around that problem by creating a file "Desktop-KDE" in my /home/<user> directory and changing the desktop path in the KDE Control Center to point to "Desktop-KDE". Then I recreate the "Desktop" file (it gets deleted when you move the contents of "Desktop" to "Desktop-KDE").
Once done, there's no more KDE desktop litter in XFCE (or Gnome if you use it - I first did this to stop the same thing from happening in Gnome).
Edit - after re-reading your post, it occurred to me that you may be talking about something else. Regardless, my suggestion may be of use, though I'm unclear what you mean by "ghost images". I was thinking about desktop icons. Maybe it's the same thing but it presents itself differently with KDE4.

First of all:
1.) I don't have a file called Desktop. Instead, it's a directory full of contents:
Access Grid 3 Venue Client.desktop
BitRock InstallBuilder Enterprise.desktop
Chimera.desktop
CueMol 1.1.desktop
HP PrecisionScan Pro.desktop
jahplayer.desktop
Jahshaka.desktop
kvirc.desktop
Molsoft ICM-Browser.desktop
Mozilla Firefox.desktop
Octave.desktop
RasWin.desktop
SeaMonkey.desktop
SequenceViewer.desktop
Stani's Python Editor.desktop
trash.desktop
Tseries BIOS Update.desktop
VEGA ZZ.desktop
ViewerLite.desktop
VLC media player.desktop I think all of these files are from Wine.
2.) Since there is no file there, I don't see what to recreate as you described.
3.) By ghost images, I mean the transparent images of applications that were running at the time that KDE had been shut down.
I think my framebuffer may not be purged before restarting another session in X. I see these images when first starting X. But then they disappear, when KDE starts drawing it's own desktop configuration.
