XDPYINFO seems unable to access X Server

I am not experiencing any problems running KDE and it's associated programs, it's just that in the course of sorting out the configuration of a new program, I am trying to run XDPYINFO.

The result I always get is:

Quote:
root@billspc:~# xdpyinfo
xdpyinfo: unable to open display "".
I should say that I get exactly the same result in all the following circumstances:

1. Terminal within KDE (logged in as root)
2. SU Terminal within KDE (logged in as user)
3. Console Screen (logged in as root)
4. SU Console screen (logged in as user.

I have searched the internet and found no solution.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Bill.

Run the command in an X terminal, as the user that is logged into X (i.e. yourself... not root or an effective root through "su").

Hi Eric,

Thanks for your reply.

I have heard X terminal referred to, but I confess that I do not know exactly what the term means or indeed how I can access it in Slackware.

Could you advise me please?

Bill.

Found it now.

xdpyinfo works in the x terminal window.

Many thanks.

Bill.
