X Hangs on nvidia GPU Slack 9.1

Hey guys,

I am trying to run a slackware 9.1 setup on my main workstation after realizing that Gentoo was too time-consuming.

Anyways, I installed Slack fine and everything boots correctly. However, my nvidia drivers give me a tainted warning when I try modprobing them (I go the official .run file from the nvidia website and ran the program - it installed fine with no warnings/errors). Okay, so I decide to change my xf86config file to the vesa drivers temproarily. One problem: X Hangs like a beotch!

Anyways, this happens when I use the nvidia or the vesa option. I startx, it takes a great deal of time to load, and then Fluxbox comes up with my keyboard and mouse not responding (I cannot turn the lock keys on/off, can't ctrl+alt+backspace out to command line, etc. - my mouse also doesn't move at all). I don't know what the problem is. I did everything like I'd do with any other distro!

Anyways, I am sorry but I cannot post my xf86config file on the board because the workstation currently does not have any possible way to get the files to another system. I wish I could because I know it would help people out a lot.

Anyways, all help is greatly appreciated and thanks for any help!

Try logging in at runlevel 3, then grabbing your /etc/XF86Config to post. It sounds like something might be messed up there. Also, try running xfree86setup at runlevel 3 to setup your /etc/XF86Config. Don't forget to comment out 'Load "DRI"'!

running xfree86setup got me to get x to load faster and to load at the correct resolutions, but I still can't get my mouse/keyboard to move and my system still hangs/freezes.

I unfortunately cannot send the actual file anywhere/anyhow. It's not a problem of accessing it, it's a problem of getting it to my laptop. I don't have a floppy drive and the cdrecord program doesn't write to my cd burner correctly unless its an ISO image I am burning.

I have no idea how to transfer it. If it is required to solve my problem, I will unfortunately need to know how to transfer the actual file to my other computer so that we can get this over with

All help, again, is appreciated! Thanks a ton!

Try this: is GPM on your system? If so and it's working you should be able to use your mouse in the console to select text. Try 'cat /etc/X11/XF86Config' and copy and paste that output to links (CLI web browser) in another console (to change just hit ctl+alt+Fkey). Hopefully that will work; I'm not sure because I don't use GPM. Are you using usb keyboard and/or mouse? If so check here for some help with getting usb stuff to work.
