X hangs at startup, permissions for normal user messed up.

When I boot up slack 10.0, after the "starting X11..." message, i get the little sand clock and the X screen, but it appears to hang as it does not load my default login manager, GDM, I'm not entirely sure if X is to blame for this.

I used alt-F6 to login as root and used startx, which started up KDE directly without a problem, however when I attempted to login with my normal user name, I get an error message about Fortune being unable to start because permission was denied and the login fails, I am returned to the login prompt. Later, using su to get to my username, I noticed that every single program refuses to start under my username, they all claim that permission is denied to whatever library or dependancy it needs, it's as if the whole directory tree suddenly became forbidden for my normal user. The only thing I remember doing beforethis problem started this was that I was attempting to install Lsongs from source (still doesn't work) and i installed many dependancies it required such as PyQt, MP3Info.py, PyXine, etc.

to summarize my problem, I am unable to start up GDM at boot time (X APPEARS to hang, im not sure), but X starts perfectly into KDE from a root console. Also, all programs are now denied to my normal user, but root still has full access to all programs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, I have been unable to find any help over the 'net. NOTE> Slack was working perfectly fine before the other day when I installed a series of new apps.

When you log in as root but before doing startx, can you issue gdm and does it start gdm, any error messages?
