X freezing problem

I'm having a weird problem with X : from time to time, it hangs (the gui doesn't work anymore, but I can still move the cursor), and I can't stop X even with ctrl+alt+backspace, so I must reset. I have no idea what could cause this. I tried to install another glx from the mesa3d libraries, and it still does the same thing. Please write me any suggestions you might consider usefull.

I'm running Slack 9.1, ATI radeon 9700 (fglrx 3.2.8 + agpgart modules), ASUS p4p800 motherboard.

Is there a pattern? I've seen a few machines
with nVidia that died a sudden death after
about 20 minutes of inactivity. Problem solved
by disabling APM/DPMS in XF86Config.

Cheers,
Tink
