Hi! I'm migrating back to slack and have just done a clean install of Slack 10.2 on an IBM Thinkad 760 that I picked up recently.
Everything i working great so far except one thing... when I try to configure or start X the srceen does not use all of it's availble space... so there is about an inch and a half border of unused screen around th display. The display is centered and inxvidtune I can only get 640x480 resolutions to appear. I am assumeing this is the problem. but I have no idea how to adjust this in xorg.conf...and trying to use settings from XF86Config made by others hasn't helped.
running xdpyinfo states that the dimensions for Screen 0 are 640x480 (217x163 milimeters) ...so basically how do I change that to 800x600
I initially installed slack 7.1 and it worked fine.
The laptop don't have network access yet so I can't post the config files.
I am currently having a very similar battle with my laptop except its doing "1152x768" instead of "1024x768" which is a good one. I was initially troubled by a limiting 640x480 as well and that was solved by setting the correct values for the monitor and screen section's in the xorg.conf. Something similar to the following could do. Check the sync and refresh rates before using these ones.
infact in xvidtune when I click "show" it displayes a modeline for 640x480...which isn't in either of the xorg.conf files (/etc/X11/ and /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/) both of which should have a modeline for 800x600
I'm not terribly concerned... as the laptop is only going to do wordprocessing, and basic coding (I only managed to eek 300MB free after install and removing some with pkgtool)
For Grub; add the comment to the end of the kernel boot line in menu.1st.

For Lilo; just uncomment the line or put it on a line by itself in lilo.conf.

So it's possible that you may be able to use the 788 value for lilo too...
I've been running slack 10.1 on the same machine since it was first released. The problem seems to be with xorg. The video card in this system is not well supported. As root, run the xorg config make all the appropriate settings for monitor etc, select sixteen bit 800X600 and you should get the screen filled out. I'll try to post my xorg.conf file when I get it back up and running. I'm currently trying to learn how to compile a custom kernel (with not much luck I might add). The color scheme is really terrible, but I only use this laptop for reading email at work and for practicing new things with linux. One other item of note, KDE is a resource hog for video apparently. Firefox and Thunderbird both look terrible if I use KDE (practically unreadable) so I switched to XFCE for the desktop. Not as easy to add programs and no desktop Icons, but it works for what I do.

Here is my xorg.conf file. This is the only way I have been able to get X to work full screen on my IBM 760XL. Note 8 bit color depth. Also I have never been able to get framebuffers to work on this system

I aologize for taking so long to get back but I've been working post audio on an indie movie with a deadline of today
I still have this problem but it's more than what I thought it was... I'm certain that the issue isn't with X now because I just realized that it apears in console too.. ie console text doesn't reach the edge of the screen. Apparently I can't get framebuffers to offer anything other than 640x480 and if I install lilo with an 800x600 display on the next reboot it will ask for a new display and only offer 640x480 options. BIOS video tests indicate that 800x600 should work. I've been trying to recompile the kernel to see if thats the issue but that has not been wanting to work.

The IBM 760 has a weird setting in bios that causes the console to come up in 600x480 with a small display centered in the monitor. While the card should do 800x600 at 16 bit color depth, XORG defaults to 64K colors in 16 bit mode which is higher than the card will do, so the system defaults to 640x480. The video card should be able to do 16 bit 32K colors, but I have found no way to make XORG accept that color depth. The only way I have been able to get 800X600 is set 8 bit color depth as default. Copy the above xorg.conf file into your xorg.conf and it should then come up in 800x600. However the colors are really crappy, especially if you use KDE. The menu bars in Firefox, etc are practically unreadable. I switched desktop to XFCE and at least now it is useable for what I do with this computer. Konquerer works fairly well if you wish to use KDE, but it is still missing somethings I like in Firefox.
As an addittion, I just finished upgrading this system to Slack 10.2 with 2.6.13 kernel. It didn't help any with screen resolution, but it works quite well otherwise. I'm still experimenting with the new OS, but sound works. I did a full install so it used up over half of my hard drive, but mostly what I do on this computer is check mail at work and try to teach myself about Linux as time allows.

P.S. Framebuffers don't seem to work well either and I get a BIOS error 0x99 each time I boot up
