wqy-zenhei-font-ttf upgrade interferes with hiragana and katankana fonts.
At first I thought it was the fontconfig upgrade, but I downgrade the wqy-zenhei-font-ttf package and it returned to normal.
With the new package Kanji and other chinese characters are ok, but with hiragana and katakana with sans, monospace it pixelated. If combined with other kanji only the kanji are smooth, not the hiragana and katakana.
I use katakana and hirgana extensively, Mr. Volkerdi assisted me in another thread, before I knew it was the wqy-zenhei-font-ttf package, which I am thankful for.
Does anybody else have problems with katakana and hirgana fonts with the new package?
I wonder if it might have to do with the syntax bug fix applied to the new /etc/fonts/conf.avail/44-wqy-zenhei.conf?
If you could test the new package using the conf file from the old package, that would be helpful. Then we'll know if it's the config file, or something to do with the new fonts.

I used the old conf from the previous package and this results in the same unexpected behavior for hiragana and katakana fonts.
I took a look at the fonts here (new package) using the character map application, and they look properly scaled and non-pixelated to me. They do appear to have a bit more weight to them than the old font set, though.
I'm far from expert in these matters, but I thought that Japanese fonts belong to sazanami-fonts-ttf package, while wqy-zenhei-font-ttf is for Chinese characters? Although I think there's at least some overlap between those.

How do they look in Character Map on your end?
Maybe a screenshot would help.
I checked th character map and they were fine. But with xfcepanel or a terminal are pixelated.

Slackware doesn't have a sazanami package as far as I can see.
Japanese Kanji and Chinese share a large number of characters this is why they come in the same font.
I've done some testing (I use it exclusively in LO) and I can see the problem you describe in the xfce terminal but not in the KDE konsole.
Some fiddling with the font settings in xfce's term and if you select WenQuanYi Zen Hei as the font is all looks beautiful but any other font and the Katakana and Hiragana look like crap.

Not sure where that takes things.
Can you check firefox and xfcepanel also? It happens there also.
Just confirming that I have exact same issue as original poster. Also I can't think of why wqy-zenhei-font-ttf (chinese) package does something to exclusively japanese, kana writing systems. Makes no sense...
