wlan usb-stick (dlink dl-524) with slack 10.1 ?

Hello, I need some of your experiences:

I got a Dlink Wireless Router and an usb-stick adapter as a gift. Itīs a DL-524.

My old Sony Vaio FX 501 runs perfectly with Slack 10.1 (10.2 didnīt work for me).
To save me a long googling session, just a question: Is it possible to get wlan working
with this device or is it a pure windows thing? Iīm a complete wlan-noob and if the
answer is: 'no!', I just keep sitting in the garden with my 15m ethernet cable ;-)

What's the model of your dlink adapter. dl-524 shows up as a router not an adapter. Also have you checked out ndiswrapper. It allows the use of windows drivers on linux.

Oh, you are right.
I didnīt check everything in the box carefully.
The usb-stick is an extra.
Itīs a Longshine "Shine Net" WLAN-Dongle. Seems to be a "LCS-8131G3"
Sorry..

Next when you plug it in. Then issue the following command
Code:

lspci
Then post what you got.

syvy 07-24-2006 10:27 AM

lspci??? gets nothing.

lsusb: Bus 001 Device 002: ID 1582:6003
dmesg: usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0x1582/0x6003) is not claimed by any active driver.

btw, my kernel is a patched (suspend2) 2.4.29

I found something about a zd1211rw-driver that might be helpful, but my Notebook has only
USB 1.1, so I think itīs better to buy a wireless PC-Card. Any recommendations for a fully
slack-compatible model?

I went with a belkin but I am having problems getting it installed so I say no to them. Look into proxim cards. They use Atheros or Ornico drivers which has pretty good linux support. Check out this web site.

Thanks for your help.

The website you suggested is a bit outdated but gives a good overview.
Atheros chipset equipped cards seem to be a good choice to start my wireless adventue ;-)

jstephens84 07-26-2006 09:58 AM

I think that is a really good choice. Kinda wish I took that approach now.

i haven't had any problems with using wireless cards with ndiswrapper (http://ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net) I'm using the 2.6.17.1 kernel, but you shouldn't have any probes with the 2.6.10 that came with slack 10.1

syvy 07-27-2006 09:42 AM

If possible I want to keep my 2.4.29 kernel. It took me a while to get everything
working well with my notebook. With Slack 10.2 and/or kernel 2.6.x I was hardly loosing
my nerves :-( The fan worked always or never, no suspend to disk, lower perfomance and so on.
So I thought: old hardware, old slackware, restored my 10.1 image and everything is ok.
I ordered an Atheros card at ebay for low money now. Whish me luck ;-)

If it is an atheros card you should not have too much problems out of it. Check out mad-wifi or wifi-radar. They are supposed to be good front end clients for wireless.

syvy 08-04-2006 10:51 AM

Wow! I couldnīt believe that it is so easy.
Just installed madwifi-drivers and wifi-radar and it works!
Thank you guys for help and pointing me in the right direction.
