I have tried (Mandrake, Redhat) just overly complicated matters. Slackware is clean, simple and sexy as it should be. Slackware is perfectly fine the way it is
This covers it :)

Get rid of Gnome and KDE ;) and it fits on one CD with
OpenOffice <BEG>

I agree: Slackware should not be changed.
I just saw that there are some programs for which I can't get ready made Slackware packages at the places I looked (like linuxpackages.net). These programs would not have to go onto CD 1 or 2, of course. For those who are satisfied with Slackware as it is, nothing has to be changed.

But does that mean that the packages I am missing can't go on CD 3, 4 or 5, which could be labelled "supplementary" or so, to make it clear that they aren't mandatory for a successful Slackware install?
I don't think so.

Ok, these are the packages which I would like to see in Slackware:
imlib2, Ruby, Ion2 or 3, PekWM, Cplay, ELinks.

However, I also agree that we should leave Slackware as it is, since it's very easy to build your own packages from source on Slack.

Well, to put my two cents in, I think that Slackware fills a nitch for those who like to get good
performance and stability out of the machine without a lot of baggage.

I too, like the installer as it gets very straightforward and easy once you have gone through it once.

Packages? Since Slack follows the UNIX/Linux conventions, as said above by someone, MOST
programs compile and install just fine. Things like Open Office can be gotten from...well, OpenOffice.org. The installer works great on ANY Linux distribution. I personally use Star Office and skip all of the Office stuff on installation anyway.

The thing about Slack is, it takes a little more effort to get just the way you like it, but the performance can't be beat! I am really impressed how well it runs on this old slow Dell, where a bunch of other distro's run like Lisa Douglas's Coffee (Greene Acres)..

I keep a copy of the current Slack around for use for testing and general use at home, however some other distro's are fine for a flashier, full-featured thing.

By the way, any word as to when 9.2 or 10 would be out? There hasn't been much news lately, however the current file is still busy....

But this requires work. Lots of work and lots of time to maintain all this stuff. And how many people are maintaining this project currently? CD 3, 4, 5 = up to 700, 1400, 2100 additional MB.

I assume all of the people wanting changes are Slackware subscribers (pay for the distro), so I would suggest emailing them and making the suggestion. Pat V. has added packages over the years due to requests from subscribers.

We don't need a GUI setup program...? The text based install is easy and works terrific

Exactly. I'd rather the maintainers work on the core packages. I can get most others on my own without much fuss.

If postfix does not appear in current or in any testing or extra directory, it would seem clear that it will not be replacing sendmail. Also since sendmail still works fine, is actively developed, most of the established Slackware user based still uses it, I doubt it will be changed any time soon.

It really is a shame that postfix does not have a package.. (i think it's because of the extra users. groups etc.. that needs to be created).

Other then that... uhm evolution would be nice and courier-imap (i think that's because of pam)
