How about we make it have all the same packages as Mandrake or Redhat. Have an installer just like them, oh and package management and dependency checking just like them..... yah that's it, that's the ticket.

My wishlist for the next Slackware release:

If LILO install fails during setup, give me the option to try again with different options. The current behavior is to tell me that I'll have to use a boot disk to start my machine, and then continue with the next installation step - which I find VERY annoying.
Give me the option of installing GRUB instead of LILO.
Build GTK+ --with-xinput=xfree, so I can use my graphics tablet in GIMP without rebuilding GTK+.
ManSlack? DrakeSlack? RedSlack? HatSlack. Yah. Thats the one. HatSlack. lol.

MagicMan

P.S. If I could change anything, I would get ALL major Hardware/Software companies to support Slack/Linux!!!! Oh, and maybe get ATI to write a decent new driver for a change.

Edit: nevermind the ATI part, I don't want to jinx the rest of it by asking for the impossible

I agree with schrambo, open office plz
No more bloat though. Definitly no gui installer and no more blooming desktops! If you want it get it from source!

edit: also can the next one do xorg? (don't want xfree lying around like an unwelcome squatter!)

Like a few other contributors to this thread, I would'nt want to have a GUI install.

Despite all this I agree with BenjiF's point regarding LILO install.

Apart from that, please, stick with the ncurses UI. And, whatever users may express they wish, stick to your policy to only include proven, mature and stable stuff.

Personally i don't install a distro wich use rpm as package management, don't like mandrake , redhat and other rpms distros. It is your wishlist but if you want rpm use mandrake or redhat, fedora and the rest.

1. menumaker: not only install it, but also run it when people installed xfce /xfce4 /fluebox /icewm /menumaker. It save a lot of time editing the menu.

2. at least one good graphic viewer like gqview, xnview, qiv or xzgv.

3. it's not a package but a small tweak. I would like to see a bash prompt with path in X. I think a small modification of /etc/profile would not be a bad idea. (because typing a wrong command in a wrong directory could be a disaster.)

---
from here the recommendation become less important:

4. Evolution, install evolution in slackware is quite complicated.

5. mplayer. It may have problems of patents though.

6. oo?

the Slackware way is to DIYS....do it yourself!! using Redhat has made you lazy!!

if you want a personalized $BASH prompt.........just add the appropriate commands to your ~/.bashrc
Again using redhat/fedora, and mandrake has made people lazy............Slackware is set up to people
can do things for themselves, it makes one Learn Linux..........and set up your own system how you want it
.........and WE do not want Slack turning into another Debian.........7 Cd's of worthless crap.......!!

How about rpm dependencies, apt-get that works exactly like debian's, and all of the gui tools of Mandrake. Then we call it Fedorakian, or Deborake, or Mandrorakian? I think I smell a new distro in the air.

I think MagicMan 's suggestion of HatSlack is the way to go! Doesn't it just roll off the tongue.

Or possible HatWare, or DrakeWare.

I'll throw in my and say love the installer the way it is.

"Sim plifyyyyy man". (Possibly the worst Simpsons quote I could have attempted).

Maybe include OO, but while it's nice, I'm not not overly impressed with it.

Oh, I missed MagicMan's. HatSlack is it. Or how about taunting SCO and naming it SuSlack?

Ok now my serious response. Leave Slack exactly as it is. Two isos are fairly quick to download and everything I've ever compiled on Slack just worked. If I didn't feel like compiling I can go to linuxpackages.net and usually find what I want. If I did compile, I didn't have to figure out where all kids of development libraries were hidden just to get the package to configure. I've used RedHat for about 6 years and just recently put Slack 9.1 on my laptop. I love it. It's simple, fast, and stable. I wanted a nice desktop so I installed Dropline Gnome. Wow, that's a great setup. Easy to maintain and gives you a very nice Gnome desktop. I'm completely satisfied with Slack and Dropline Gnome.

I, like many others, have gone to slack for the simplicity. I love how slack is setup, it's perfect. There are many other distro's out there. A lot of the idea's mentioned in this thread would essentially turn Slackware into another mandrake or redhat. I have learned a LOT about linux just because of how slackware is setup and I have had a lot of fun doing it. I found the other distro's I have tried (Mandrake, Redhat) just overly complicated matters. Slackware is clean, simple and sexy as it should be. Slackware is perfectly fine the way it is

If I had to make a suggestion it would be the inclusion of one of the popular package getting programs, be it swaret (my personal favourite), slapt-get or slackupdate.

*grumbles* I did wish I knew about this place a long time ago though, would've made my life a lot easier
