I have been running a Slackware server for almost a year and a half now. During the hot summer months I've been moving the server pc into the basement to keep it cool. A Westell Versalink wireless modem router and a wireless Belkin PCI G card make this temporary move possible. Till today. I noticed this morning that my server wasn't serving. When I checked the server from the console it seemed ok but wouldn't transmit ping requests. Then I tried another wireless device and couldn't connect to my router with that one either (I stopped the encryption and powered down the router first to reset the signal). It connects fine through a wired connection to the same router...which is how it is set up now but now my pc is not in the cool basement.
I'm thinking this 3 year old Westell Versalink wireless router is about to byte the dust and I cannot do anything except replace it. Is this thinking right?
weird...now the router is transmitting wirelessly again. Not very reliable-I'll probably replace it soon. All I did was disable and then enable wireless transmissions in 192.168.1.1.....powering the unit down and up I thought would also reset the wireless part.

Hi,
If the wireless fails on the modem then get a AP or even a wireless router. Such as a Linksys WRT54G to give you the wireless back. Unless the modem fails all together this would be the cheapest. That is unless you have a warranty or insurance on the modem.
I've been thinking about getting a real wireless router instead of this modem/router combo cheapie that Verizon gives out (and wants to resell me). I've had connectivity problems with this Westell when 2 or more wireless devices try to connect. I've been wondering about these 2 antenna Linksys routers. Do the 2 antennas offer better wireless connectivity for 2 wireless devices?
