Wireless and Slackware 12.1 ( modprobe issue )

Hi everyone,

i have just installed slackware 12.1 on my acer laptop ( acer 5050 ).

everything seems to work, but I got a strange issue with ndiswrapper.

my card is the bcm43xx broadcam one, and the issue is that ndiswrapper will not load to modprobe comand.

driver : XP driver from acer download section
ndiswrapper : 1.52 smp version ( slackpackage from linuxpackages.net 12.0 section)

what happend:

installed ndiswrapper by pkgtool
installed driver : ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf, ndiswrapper -m

checked driver install :
ndiswrapper -l -> OK

Ok driver installed, blacklisted the bcm43xx and here comes the trouble:

modprobe ndiswrapper (enter )

Error: could not find module ndiswrapper

( checked /lib/modules-xxxx and yes it seems to be there and OK )

In short word, it will not load

has anybody experienced the same ?? or has a solution ??

( PS: worked like a charm on 12.0 )

Just a shot in the dark, but this package is built for 12.0. I would uninstall it and use the SlackBuild for 12.1 from slackbuilds.org (they've done a great job of updating everything already for 12.1).

thanx for the suggestion I will try ......

in ant case, you are right the ndiswrapper files need to be re-compiled for 12.1 .

I let you know .....

You can compile ndiswrapper yourself using a slackbuild from www.slackbuilds.org

Here's the direct link for ndiswrapper on Slackware 12.1:

http://slackbuilds.org/repository/12...k/ndiswrapper/

Slackbuilds are scripts to create packages that you install later using package tools (installpkg/upgradepkg/removepkg)

My suggestion would be to try the native kernel drivers instead of ndiswrapper. Slackware should automatically load the correct module for your card. (Either the b43 or b43legacy module. bcm43xx is the old deprecated driver.)

You'll need to make sure that you install the correct firmware. Detailed instructions are available at linuxwireless.org.

when i installed slack 12.1 i started to configure bcm4318 card and lspci gave me the results that the broacom card was accessed by the module ssb, i already had firmware installed by the way. So try blacklisting ssb. If this works when you boot up you should see "bc43xx Radio Phy other stuff here" for 7-8 lines at boot up!
