Just follow the instructions on how to install from source and get the source here. (Get Wine-20040505.tar.gz, the latest version)

It really is that simple!

I used the slackware package and simply installed it with installpkg. I then used winetools for the basic setup, but had to tweak my config file a little bit so I could save to my web directory. Wine works fine on slckware, I use Photoshop regularly.

@greythorne

Alternatively, use a package. Further to what datadriven was saying, go to linux packages and search for "wine" under 9.1. You can then download a .tgz file.

Su to root, then installpkg <filename.tgz>

Make sure you read the instructions first!

Are you trying to do a make, make install on the source or did you do use tools/wineinstall?

I used tools/wineinstall and it worked perfectly.

There are slackware packages available from winehq.org, you don't need to use linuxpackages.net

I keep trying to do this, and no luck...

I got the file wine-20040408-i686-s9dlg.tgz and installed it using pkgtool. No errors that i could see.
I got the file winetools-2.1.0.tgz and installed it the same way.
To see if it was installed correctly, I just typed "wine" into a console. I got this back as an error. wine: relocation error: /usr/local/lib/libntdll.so: undefined symbol: casemap_lower

I also typed wine notepad, and got the same thing. I have searched for other questions with this error, and none have an answer that I could find.

SBing, you mentioned to get the source (similar to my above file) and follow the instructions. The instructions do not apply to a .tgz file like the one I have, they refer to a tar.gz:

From Source

Extract the downloaded file:
tar zxvf Wine-YYYYMMDD.tar.gz
This will create a new directory, enter this directory, then type:
./configure && make depend && make && su -c "make install"

I don't think I can use those directions, can I? Aren't I supposed to use something like pkgtool for tgz type files? Problem is, it didn't work! I am getting pretty confused, I hope someone can help me!

Get a clean start. Remove package first if you used the package from linuxpackages. Just to be sure, reboot. Read the step you need to take to install the up to date linuxpackages wine package for slack 9.1 (no extra step is needed for slack 10). Read what you need to do before using wine for the first time. Its all there.

Ok, I can do that. I have Slack 10.0.

Could you please let me know which directions to use and with which package? I am doing lots of reading, and some directions go with one type of package etc.

For example, if I want to use Frank's WineTools, I can't use the 2 newer sources of Wine. If i use the newer sources of Wine, do I even really need Franks Winetools?

Another example, I am running xorg (very welll, no problems), so that means I should download the source of wine that has dlg in the name.

Isn't it best to use packages from http://sourceforge.net/project/showf...group_id=6241?

Should I use the Slackware pacakes here or the source packages? I can type make, make install and all that if necessary...

I've been reading everything about Wine I can find on how to install, and it looks so easy but it never works for me. This is really the only thing keeping me from using Windows: I need an MSMoney type program, and found a very nice one that will run under Wine (AceMoney).

If someone would just give me one link from where to download one file, and tell me to either use pkgtool or make, make install etc, i would be grateful! I haven't even gotten to the point of configuring the .conf file yet!

I built wine using configure, make, su, checkinstall and it works fine for me w/ slack 10. I did have to use the unsupported xfree86-4.4 packages instead of x11 because of a wine bug that wouldn't let photoshop work with x.org. If you don't have checkinstall it is definitely a MUST HAVE.
