I run TWM when logged in as root. The fact that you don't need to install XAP to have TWM is one thing in its favour as is the fact that you only need Xlib.

Generally, as root you only need to be running a copy of Terminal and one or two copies of Thunar.

Thunar? We don' need no stinkin' Thunars --I've always preferred just running mc in one or two of the xterms that TWM brings up.
