Will we be able to have Dropbox in Slackware 14.2?

Good afternoon Slackers!

I tried to install Dropbox on Slackware -current using Alien Bob's package 1.61 for Dropbox. It would not connect to Dropbox servers because it is too old. Any suggestions for when stable is released?

Thanks!

Must admit I am surprised : I actually run current with Dropbox without any problem (fortunatly since my productivity unfortunately relies much on it for now)...

Could you post the errors ?

jackmule 02-12-2016 12:17 PM

I will try it again this weekend. I was surprised as well as I also depend on Dropbox.

Did you try the SBo version?

jackmule 02-12-2016 12:28 PM

I tried it a long time ago. May have to go back to it. Will try to keep you posted.

Alien Bob's Dropbox package is working fine for me on -current.

Did you install it on a fresh install, or has it been there for a while and silently upgraded in the background?

I'm using the current SBo for the slackbuilds page with no problems. This is on the latest -current.

Silently upgraded in the background. The installation was only a week or two ago though.

My package works for me too. Just installed it on a fresh -current and on 14.1.
My package contains the dropbox-client only. When you start it from the menu, it will actually call "dropbox start -i" and that will trigger a download of the most recent dropbox daemon from dropbox.com (currently that will be version 3.14.5) if you do not yet have one. There is nothing "too old to connect". I guess that something else is not OK on your computer. See if there is a ".dropbox-dist" directory in your ${HOME} and remove or rename that - it contains the downloaded dropbox daemon plus supporting libraries. If you remove/rename the directory and run "dropbox start -i" the client will download a new deamon distributable.

Running 14.1 32bit current with the SlackBuilds Dropbox downloaded and built on 7 Feb 2006 here, no problems.

No problem here, now running 4 computers with current.
Last install one week ago.
also working fine with my 3 13.37

all from SBo

Dropbox is now on version 3.14.5; maybe that version you are trying to use, 1.6, is too old?

EDIT. Please ignore, see AlienBob below and above (missed that among all 'it works here' messages): 3.14.5 is not the version of his package

As I explained earlier, 1.6 is the version of the client. And 3.14.5 is the version of the daemon.
My own package contains just the client which downloads the daemon from the Dropbox website automatically when started for the first time.
The SBo script packages the Dropbox daemon, not the client.

brobr 02-13-2016 06:20 AM

Sorry, you're right.

EDIT: didn't notice your above explanation; missing an upgrade-install of the daemon (now to 3.14.5) is what I had in mind.
