will slackware drop newer KDE versions or go systemd
it's pretty clear newer versions of KDE will not run without systemd
so the question is witch will it be drop KDE or go systemd ? another question is do the slackware users have anything to say about hoping on the KDE band wagon ? a lot of slackers are refugees from systemd |
Patrick Volkerding will decide what to do, already knows users' opinions and has already suggested that this kind of discussion be reopened when systemd will be included in Slackware.
This response intentionally removes the "zero reply" status of this thread. I wouldn't mind if it would be moved to "Linux, general" or to "General". |
just to clarify, looking here it doesn't seem to be mandatory: why do you say "it's pretty clear newer versions of KDE will not run without systemd"?

if you want to test how it works fine without systemd please try Alien Bob's version, he even provides a live iso (slackware64-live-plasma5-current.iso) http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/slackware-live/latest/ http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/for-...ts-of-goodies/ |

But this didn't happen yet, that's all I know. Quote:
You can also install dlackware provided by Bart Van Der Hall aka bartgymnast but it comes with Gnome3. Alien BoB even provides a DLACK variant of the liveslak. In his own words "The DLACK variant contains Dlackware – this is Slackware (minus KDE4) with PAM and Systemd bolted on, and with Gnome 3.22 as the Desktop Environment" PS ponce was faster. |
That article in soylentnews is in part not factually correct.
The part that is (partly) correct is that Plasma5 has a runtime dependency on logind, which is a part of systemd just like udev is. But the complete truth is that only the Wayland component of KWin depends on a "logind D-Bus service". This is not the same as depending on logind itself, or even systemd. All that kwin_wayland requires is an IMPLEMENTATION of the logind D-Bus protocol. That implementation is on the TODO list of ConsoleKit2 developers by the way. For your information, Slackware already uses a standalone version of systemd-udev (eudev), and I do not hear you about that. Likewise, there is a standalone version of systemd-logind (elogind) which can be used without having to adopt or implement the full systemd. I tested that last year, and it integrates well in Slackware without adverse effects. In fact, the blog post and its comments as referenced by that soylentnews post, is TWO YEARS OLD. And in the particular comment Dave responds "we'll be dropping legacy support in 5.5; over 6 months from now". We are today at Plasma 5.9 and you can see in http://alien.slackbook.org/blog/tag/plasma5/ it is still very much possible to replace Slackware's KDE4 with Plasma5 and have a pleasant experience without any trace of systemd. try it! If you do not want to install Plasma 5, try it safely in a Live variant: http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/sla...a5-current.iso Quote:
PS: both ponce and Didier were faster :-) |

also, kde is used by many s.o. beside linux, so I think it will be a bad move for them to go heavy-systemd dependant. *bsd and others are systemd incompatible and if kde will go that route, it will probably mean cutting down their userbase (although not by much i admit) we will see, i trust pat and the others will take the right decisions, like they did until now. i like slack very much and if it will accept this mess of a system, it will be a pity. for now however, there seems to be no real concern, so i can sleep peacefully ;) |

I really hope that Slackware would stay with KDE4 forever and would never touch that thing called Plasma5! Long live KDE4! Burn in fire, ugly Plasma5! |

It was the same going from KDE 3 to KDE 4. Some people wanted to stick with KDE 3 and thus Trinity Desktop was born. No idea if KDE 4 will go the same way, who knows. Bug judging by the fact that there has not been any development for KDE 4 in a long time, and nobody picked up the code and ran with it, I assume that Qt5 and Plasma 5 are the future. |
I almost have a feeling someone is trying to start something, going from post about trojans in systemd (like they wouldn't be noticed by someone) and now KDE in the Slackware subforum of all places. Of all places why here? :( Are the gods punishing us?
There is no reason for KDE to be dropped because of systemd. I bet a systemd shim would probably be adopted first unless the scope creep stopped and what is there is really good (stable and great functionality over what we have now). |
