Wait and see No right now at least, you have grub-0.97.

Out of curiosity, why do you need grub2 ?

EDIT from one of your other posts, it seems that you are using Windows 7 also.

There is no problem installing Slackware alongside Windows 7 using lilo to start either one.

I use to install the bootloader on the root Slackware partition (the one mounted as /), to avoid messing with the MBR.

Not for a serious reason.

I just feel that Slackware pays less attention to the most popular boot loader on linux grub beside lilo.

Since the stable grub 2.0 has been released, i hope that situation could be changed.

If I understand well, a piece of software is added in Slackware when it is needed and that need is not already fulfilled by an existing package.

But I am not sure that in Patrick Volkerding's mind, "most popular" implies "needed"

That said, I can't judge by myself what grub 2.0 brings that grub do not, as I only use lilo

It depends on what you consider "popular" to mean.

If you call something which is widespread and heavily used as a default "popular", yes, it is popular.

If you call something which is loved and respected by many "popular", then I am afraid Grub2 is not popular.

Not long ago, I witnessed a discussion in a Spanish Debian forum about Grub2. It was regarded as a Minion of the Dark Forces by 90% of the users in the thread, and the other 10% thought of it as the Master of the Dark Forces himself. There is people that likes Grub2, but I would say most people don't. Grub 2 configuration process is clumsy and, by the way, not that good documented. The "advantages" of grub2 over grub-legacy, while they exist, are not generally interesting for 95% of users, who will only see the disadvantages of the new configuration system. I'd chose syslinux, Lilo or Grub-legacy any day unless I needed a particular Gurb2 feature (may the Lord protect me that day!).

Better adding support for the syslinux bootloaders to the installer IMO.

I'd support this. extlinux is fantastic - install the bootloader, then edit syslinux.conf with your favourite text editor to add a new kernel to the menu. No external commands to run, no fuss. This is how bootloading ought to be.
