Wiki engine for Slackware

I have Slackware 11 at this time. I'd like to install and experiment with hosting a wiki engine. Any suggestions or good/bad experiences?

I'm new to Linux so I'm looking for something easy to setup. A simple wiki engine will suffice, it doesn't have to be sophisticated.

Thanks in advance,

Ash.

I've used Moin for several years now for a personal wiki. If I can set it up it has to be easy.

Alien Bob (one of the Slackware contributors and long standing member here) uses DokuWiki - as seen here: http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/doku.php

I've used MediaWiki, dokuwiki and WiGit:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki
http://www.dokuwiki.org/dokuwiki

MediaWiki is a great piece of software. Its got it all. It is though a bit of a beast, and might be too much if your needs are simple. dokuwiki is also a very complete wiki engine, with the advantage of being able to run without a database like MySQL or PostgreSQL, making it even easier to setup and maintain. WiGit is the simplest of the bunch. Basically it's just a PHP powered web-interface sitting on top of Git. It's pretty good, if your needs aren't too complex.

They all require PHP and a webserver of sorts.

They are all fairly simple to test, so why not try them all and then decide?

Perhaps MediaWiki is great for a large-scale knowledge database with many contributors and no restrictions, but I believe DokuWiki wins the contest of "best wiki" hands-down if you want to setup a medium-sized documentation/knowledge database maintained by multiple teams, each allowed to update their own part of the knowledge database, and with a great set of structural elements to be used in the wiki pages.

Look at my wiki to see how much Dokuwiki can look and feel like Mediawiki (for some people that is actually a requirement) by just applying a template.

I use MediaWiki at work for a team-based knowledge base, but since MediaWiki lacks the concept of Access Control Lists (the philosophy is that knowledge should be free to access and update for all) it is not up to my requirements. The trouble I had to take in order to get acceptable search functionality makes me curse the Wiki every day, and then there is the lack of useful syntax elements in MediaWiki that actually prevent me from setting up a decent documentation-oriented web site.

A major issue for you will be the age of your Slackware installation. Slackware 11.0 has PHP4 which is too old for DokuWiki and MediaWiki - both require PHP5.
