wicd keeps dropping my wifi connedtion

on slackware64-13.37
wicd keeps dropping my wifi connection most of the time I can just tell wicd
to reconnect
the connection never stays up for more than 10 minuets with out doing
other times it looks like it connected when it didn't
other times it times out when obtaining the ip address
in these 2 cases I have to run "etc/rc.d/rc.wicd restart
then tell it to connect
sometimes posting on forums requires me to copy my text hit submit hope the connection is still up maybe restart wicd reconnect

is there a bug in wicd or python ?

you didn't say what kind of wifi adepter your using
if it's an athrous 9170 chip set this is a known bug in the firmware the latest version is better but this problem is still there

Is this all the time or when just using certain applications like a Bittorrent app?

My post here is useless, but I keep seeing all of these posts about broken things in Slackware lately. Maybe the Slackware devs have been slacking and need to get to work!

If you cannot reply to the topic, why bother? That being said, the same could be said if we trolled the Arch forums but I'm willing to bet that most of the problems reported, here as well as Arch, are user related issues.

Which version of wicd are you using?

Kind regards

Do you have other network management application, such as network-manager, running on another box to confirm that the issue is indeed coming from wicd and not the router? I had a similar issue in the past and after updating the firmware of the router with dd-wrt, the issue completely disappears.

I made the switch to Networkmanager yesterday on my Acer netbook running Slackware 13.37. There are a fair number of required dependencies, but, I am pleased with the connectivity. I grabbed the build scripts from SBo. This might be an option if wicd continues to give you grief.

hitest, what are the dependencies? I do not see any listed on the Slackbuilds link for 13.37:

http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13...etworkManager/

Thanks

If you want the network-manager-applet mentioned on that page there are a few dependencies that go with that. So if you want the GUI you'll need to install those dependencies.

Gotcha, I didn't bother to look at the applet for dependencies.

untouched fresh install of slackware64-13.37 no other network management application running
fact is that the wifi adapter quit working completely about 4hours after my first install of 13.37 so I reinstalled after 20 hours of trying to fix it
the router is out of the box factory defaults tested with windoze on 2 computers
one of the computers is the one I'm having this problem on (duel boot)
so the router is OK the wifi adapter is OK
next most likely source of this problem is wicd or python

I'm not using Slackware, but I had a similar issue some weeks ago, after upgrading the kernel to version 2.6.39, so I guess in my case it was a faulty driver for my wireless adapter (a rt2500 card, it was fixed by adding iwconfig wlan0 power off to /etc/rc.local). Can you tell which wireless chipset are you using? Maybe it can help to find a solution. You could also check /var/log/messages and /var/log/kern.log when you get disconnected to see if there are any clues there.

Regards.

Agree with hitest,
I had similar problem when I just installed 13.37 with WICD, now I am using NetworkManager, wireless connection gets a lot better..

I had some problems with wicd, but after upgrading it to version number 1.7.0 works like a charm. If this doesn't work for you maybe you need to check what wirelese modules do you have.

Check your router and make sure you have things like DHCP-Masq, DNS-Masq and such options disabled if your router supports them. I've had issues with those settings being enabled with my laptop as well.
