In one word: yes.
Linux without GNU would be like Rolls without Royce, Laurel without Hardy, and fish without chips. :)

Lots of Windows versions.

The following is IMO slightly off-topic, but since it was mentioned in this thread, and because this thread is still going, and because it's got a few posts and quotes within it that make this statement, I decided to add something..

The quoted statement at top is repeated in various threads around LQ, and probably elsewhere on the net too. And basically (like, on the surface) I agree too - in my experience, Windows is Windows by and large - but I've only used a small fraction of the Windows collection (to any great extent).

Maybe this is being a little pedantic, but there are actually LOTS of Windows' distros (yes, many are extremely similar under the hood, perhaps just like all those Linux's referred to in the quote), and there are still people out there using some of the really old versions (same for Linux).

There was a story in LXer forum about a common complaint from Win-->Lin Newbies being that there are "..too many versions to choose from!?..", and the story went on to demonstrate that there are (IIRC) some 200+ "different" Windows distros. I can't find that story now (so do not quote me on the 200+, my memory sucks!), but this Wikipedia article does a half-decent job of showing that there are quite a number of versions and sub-versions of Windows:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...ndows_versions

According to this 11 is louder article here, as of Sept 07, 2010, MS had at least 13 Windows versions on the market (and that article doesn't mention all of the Windows7 versions there apparently are - 6 or 7 I believe).

Anyhow, as I said: a bit pedantic, slightly off-topic (sorry! Dunno what this has to do with Slack or LSB), but there you have it.

Cheerios!

Since GNU predates Linux, the answer is "yes".
