Why no /dev/lp0 in CUPS

O.K., The question of how to get a /dev/lp0 was answered in this thread

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...=cups+FdevFlp0

But that brings another question to my mind. I was using LPRng with no problem before starting the switch to CUPS.

Why did the parallel port work for LPRng but not for CUPS?

Just curious.
