why my dma keep going down on my slack 11 kernel 2.6.18?


Hello everybody!

Why my dma keep going down on my slack 11 kernel 2.6.18?

Every time I start doing any heavy job (like unrar a huge file, burn a dvd or conect to many torrents at the same time) my two hds (hda and hdb) dma gets down, driving me nuts!

The kernel is the 2.6.18, custon compiled, and used to work fine with my slack 10.1.

I'm not a newbie, but this time I'm lost: can't figure on how to solve this.
Even if I do #hdparm -d1 /dev/hdb, dma falls down again later.....

Just now I'm downloading kernel 2.6.18.2.
Maybe a newer kernel solves the problem...

I have a similar problem that appears to have turned up on a recent kernel upgrade under Slackware 10.2.

It causes DMA to be turned off when booting in response to a plethora of these errors:

Erick,

I had a similar problem on my system until very recently. See HERE and HERE. I was running the 2.4 kernel on ReiserFS without the initrd.gz. The drive performance was terrible. DMA could not be activated using hdparm. I reinstalled Slack with the 2.6 kernel + kernel source, headers, modules on to ext3 partitions. I created an initrd.gz and corrected my bootloader accordingly. Drive performance is blazing fast now... better than on my other distros.

I did fix it by exchanging the ide flat cable.......

There is an option in the kernel that solves the drive seek error.
