Currently I am running Slackware 10.0 (fairly well) with the 2.4.26 kernel, but with some of the buzz with the 2.6.7 kernel the only question is: should I switch to the 2.6.7 kernel or keep using my current kernel?
On older hardware the 2.4.x series is fine. The 2.6.x is not really stable yet but you can always try it if you want to, using a dualboot. Or compile your own (2.4.27 and 2.6.9 are the latest at the moment).
I like the 2.4.27 kernel from slackware current but.. in my quest for gnome 2.8 (which I decided to install through dropline (WHICH IS FAR TOO INTRUSIVE)) I was driven to 2.6.9 it takes some patience and knowlege to compile but it's nice in its own ways.
Well after sifting through the forums and doing some thinking I decided two things...
One: Try an upgrade...
Two: ...Use the version in CD2:/testing
Aside from a few little bumps along the way (like KDE's control center app for the kernel source not being compatible with anything above 2.5.x) my computer actually worked better than the 2.4.26 kernel, so I replaced it Saturday.
i have recently upgraded from 2.4.26 to 2.6.7 (downloaded from kernel.org and compiled myself). it took some trial and error to find out which options i need to install to get back to how i was with 2.4.26. everything works just fine except for it seems my system is running significantly slower... i have no idea what this could be due to. i have an AMD Athlon 3200+ (not oc'd) with 1024mb DDR400, and Radeon 9800pro, and X is laggy. its useable, but still very frustrating. everything, including bootup is quite slow. glx gears reports that i get about 550 frames in 6 secs (~92fps)... quite crappy. i havnt run glx gears in 2.4.26 yet (dual boot), but it still shouldnt be 92fps.. hehe. i have tried all kinds of things in my kernel config, enabling and disabling certain features, and have not been able to remedy it. any help?
