Which version of Apache? PHP?
 

Hey guys,

I installed Apache-1.3.33 and PHP-4.4.0 from the Slackware 10.2 tree. When I went to the Apache web site to look for doc I see that there are several versions and all the ones higher than 1.3 look as though they have many improvements but I haven't a clue if any of them are relevant for me.

How do you choose the right versions of Apache and PHP and are there any big problems with later versions that caused Pat to avoid shipping them in 10.2?

I don't think I will need to do anything fancy but I will run the web server on my desktop machine and I'd like to jail it as much as possible since I can't run a dedicated server. Any helpful suggestions or pointers to reading material will be graciously accepted :p

no major reason I can think to not run apache 2.0+ and PHP5. starting with apache 2.0-2.2x there was a major rewrite and pages are served much faster than v1.3.

The only reason for not upgrading from apache 1.3 is if you are using some old modules which no one decided to bother porting to 2.0. Since your's is a new install... you're all good.

Correction: one reason is that I have to build all this stuff now whereas Pat already built the packages for 10.2 :p

I agree with upgrading to apache 2.x.x but not so sure about PHP5. They have changed somethings in PHP5 and some of your scripts might not run. Most of the big guys have updated their scripts to run in PHP5 but some have not. When PHP5 first started to spread, phpBB could not handle it, now it can.
If you will be using other's scripts, make sure they can run in PHP5 before upgrading.

Thanks, Lou. I guess I'll mostly be trying to write my own stuff although there are a few things I would like to use like CVS front-ends that are available. At this point I have nothing so I can't go wrong :p
