which mail program ?

hi there people , here i come again :

I'd like to know what programs like sylpheed and kmail do . i see people talking about them all the time but i didn't care to look cause i always go where my emails are and just read them . I have sylpheed on a cd and perhaps i could make a better use of it . I know they are mail retrievers or something like it but i never been abble to configure them properly . two questions :

1- what kind of information do i need to make them run properly
2- How practical are they ? I mean do they save you time ? ( i guess you could write messages too?)

sorry for posting this kind of threads on this forum but sometimes i feel kinda lost with information and i just don't know anymore what i'm talking about ....hope you understand

jamaso,

Sylpheed and Kmail are email clients (like M$ Outlook, Eudora, etc), which allow you to retrieve, read, and compose email. Other features differ from client to client. The primary benefit is that they provide a gui interface which is fairly easy to navigate and provides the user with an environment to which they may already be accustom.

The only bits of information you need to run them are:

- pop/smtp mail server name (i.e. mail.attbi.com if your ISP is at&t)
- password

That should then allow you to retrieve your email from you ISP's mail server. If your email comes to your local server directly (i.e var/spool/mail/username), then you can set the clients up to check that mailbox as well.

I'm currently using Sylpheed on my Slackware 8.0 box and Ximian on my Red Hat 7.3 laptop.

You can check out www.freshmeat.net for current versions of those clients as well as find others.

is there any program that supports PGP encryption and hotmail accounts ?

manaskb 05-14-2002 04:56 PM

In addition Kmail , Sylpheed and evolution also support IMAP. For accessing IMAP mail boxes kmail and evolution are very impressive.

These mail clients also have integrated address books. Evolution appearsto be a more comprehensive groupware solution with a integrated calendar.

sapilas,

Regarding access to a hotmail account, as long as you have POP3 access to hotmail (I don't use it so I don't know if this is available), then you can access it with most email clients. You just need to enter the server information and your login info.

As far as PGP support goes, I just did a quick search on www.freshmeat.net and didn't see anything that had PGP bundled with a gui email client. There was a listing for a PGP add-on for Pine. You can try a more thorough search though.

I did find a nice little lib/tool for reading .pst files and converting them to mbox files. That's nice since I've got my old Outlook folders still archived with no way to access them. I'll check it out tonight. Here's the link: http://freshmeat.net/projects/libpst/?topic_id=31

jpweston,

about the hotmail, Is it working like an pop3 server ?

if yes how do I get the ip of the hotmail server ?then ?

kmail is already installed and claims to support pgp.... so I ok from the point of security . .I ll try to setup it later..

sapilas,

I don't know if hotmail offers pop3 access or not. If you have an account, I'd suggest looking in the "options" or "settings" section - whatever it's called - and see if there is anything for "pop3 settings." You most likely won't need an IP address, just the server name (i.e. pop3.hotmail.com).

I took a quick look at the hotmail faq and didn't see anything, but it may just be hidden in the member settings area.

On another note, the libpst program I mentioned in my previous post worked like a charm. I was able to convert my archived Outlook messages into mbox format.

Good stuff.
