Which KDE to use? [+RANT]
Good afternoon, ppl (adjusted for your tz)!
OK, I'm running Slackware 13(32-bit) on an amd64 system. I've got the default KDE-4.2.4 installed and running without any real complaints.
Myself, I almost never use a WM/DE fatter than XFCE.
But it's technically my partner's computer, and she has been fairly indulgent as I first installed Linux, then gradually wedged XP down to a 20G partition, then relegated XP to a VM, and now she's used to working in KDE, and if it weren't for Wine I wouldn't have a relationship, and you kinda get the picture...
Needless to say I've walked a fine line and learned a lot about patience (as has she) and user support compared to the free-wheeling days of just me and root. It was almost the last straw ironing out the udev rules to get the new HP printer working so she could print pictures of the babies.
And now the 3 yo is climbing on my lap demanding that I stop typing all those letters in the little black box and switch over to Supertux!
So as you see, this is a mission-critical situation. I can't do anything too risky or experimental, or there may be Hell to pay!
Given all that, is it worthwhile for us to upgrade to KDE-4.3.1, or am I just asking for trouble?

I've had no trouble with 4.3.1, try it.

Upgrading to 4.3.x is worth it. See http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...vbatts-778684/ how to use vbatts' packages.

Thanks for the input. I might try it with 64current on a spare partition first...

Yup! I use Slackware64-13 -stable with Vincent Batts's KDE 4.3.1 and have no trouble at all. I have disabled Strigi and NEPOMUK for the time being. I think those technologies could be useful for me in the future, but I'm holding off for right now.
I'm on the verge of creating a user account for my four-year-old son. I want to install Alien Bob's proxy/filtering solution first.
Regards,

Things to look forward to! My son is still just playing games under supervision, and I've been looking at setting up some VM's with Qimo and/or Sugar for him to play with. But then the "inner slacker" in me says "these would be better if they were based on SW instead of Ubuntu and Fedora," so I sense another diy project. Maybe before I get a chance to make my slack version of 64studio. (but then that's another thread topic altogether...)

Jim,
Let me know if you get something working on Qimo or Sugar.
