Which file to backup?

Hi guys!

I have a file server running on slackware. I'm using cron and tar for my scheduled backup of user files. Is there any files i'm missing like the password, groups, permissions, etc... ? I want to know what are the files that are necessary to backup so I'f ever my server crash, I can always transfer the confugaration and files to another computer.

Thanks.

You might just want to back up the entire /etc directory to get all of the configuration files. You'll probably want to restore them by hand if you have a complete system crash, but it's very good to have them around. File permissions are stored with the files themselves (actually in the inode) so no worries there, but you'll definitely want the passwd, group, and shadow files out of /etc and you really may as well just back up the whole directory to make sure you get all your config files.
