When does login get called during system init?

I'm trying to find that line in the init files, but I don't see anything blatantly referring to login yet.

login doesn't get called directly by init. The getty process has to setup the tty ready for user input and then calls login when the user enters something. One little bit of unix trivia is that the first user/password prompt you get is actually provided by the getty process, but if you get the user/password wrong, the second prompt you get will be provided by the login process.

That's because they don't. The init process spawns agetty processes which deals with login. Have a look here for a good run down of Slackware's init processes. Another useful resource here describes the Linux startup processes chapter by chapter and, although not Slackware specific, is a good general resource.
