What kind of printer do you use with Slackware 64bit 13.37?

If you've bought a newer printer recently and use it with Slackware 64bit 13.37, I'd be interested in knowing the make, model and where you got the drivers from.

Currently I'm using an old Lexmark z605 but the driver only works for 32bit. Plus my 12 year old daughter wants to print LOTs of stuff, so I'd rather have something where the cost of ink is alot cheaper (maybe a lasor printer?)

Thanks!

I also have a printer that only has a 32bit driver, but it works very happily in Slackware64 with Alien_Bob's cups-compat32-1.4.8-x86_64-1.txz and glibc-solibs-2.15_multilib-x86_64-2alien.txz packages installed.
Buying a new printer just for Slackware64 should not be necessary. I do agree that ink costs are a factor to consider. I was very happy when I found an alternative source of cartridges apart from the OEM cartridges.

If you are printing "lots of stuff" in black, I'd go laser. So far, IMHO, you can't go wrong with HP. I still use an HP Laserjet 6MP (it just won't die) and also an HP Laserjet M1212nf MFP via HPLIP. All function work. Laserjet cartrigdes are pricey, but at 3000+ pages better than the black cartridge in the HP deskjet 990cm I also have running. If you are shopping, research each model for CUPS and/or HPLIP support - and not just proprietary drivers (like Lexmark) but those that release as open source. These are more likely to be updated/supported/available longer.

allend is correct, 99% probability that you should be able to run the driver with the 32-bit mutlib stuff installed.

It was a year or two ago but I have a HP Photosmart C4680, it prints, scans and copies (and an HP Business Inkjet 2280tn; it's about 15 year old, Ethernet interface, works like a charm). They're configured and fully functional with HPLIP.

Hewlett-Packard supports pretty much every printer they make (and most that they have made) with HPLIP (it's included in Slackware). Easy set up and reliable.

I do have a Canon boat-anchor I'd be happy to give you; zero support from Canon for Linux systems (that may have changed, but it's been my experience -- others may vary).

Can't go wrong with H-P.

Hope this helps some.

Hi,

I like to use Brother series laser printers for my general printing needs: HL2070N, HL2270DW(2-sided print, wireless & Ethernet) & a old HL1550. Great printers for the buck!
I use the 'ppd' files from 'Foomatic' for the HL2xxx printers. There is source to create the driver for HL2270DW but it produced some errors at times.

I use an old Brother DCP-115C. Drivers only work with multilib, but its still incredibly fast and has never let me down in the past 5 years. If it dies one day, my next one will be a Brother, too.

Sure, it has a waste counter, but the reset codes are well known by the internet. So who cares It also takes cheap HP ink I can get for some bucks on Ebay so I never run out of ink.

Thanks for that. I didn't know there is a .ppd driver for HL2270DW. Just installed it without the need for multilib.

I'm using a cheap HP Deskjet D4260, bought it a few years ago, easy to set up - recognised right away by Slack (32 & 64). Never any trouble since.

Your welcome.
It's been a while since I have used that driver. My printing had occasional issue with the original driver. May look at it again to see if things are working.

Samsung M1610 laser, fully functional with ppd from foomatic (I think, else there are a few out there that work), -current64, no multi-lib, plus over network with various -current32 and 64.

cheers,

I am using a HP Deskjet 3845 with Slackware 13.37 (32bit). All I did was start cups and plug it in. It seems to work fine, but I have only printed some basic text documents.

I'm using a HP Deskjet 5940 . Works better with Slackware CUPS & hplip than it does under Windows 7. like coldbeer i've been thinking of getting a BW laser printer because ink is stupidly expensive (even the refill cartridges).

Samsung CLX-3185 multi function colour laser printer. The software supplied by Samsung, to check toner levels, works with some minor modification to the scripts and has to be run from the command line. The print works through CUPS and the scanner through SANE.

Has anyone any experience in updating the printer firmware to disable chip detection on the toner cartridges?
