what is the File encryption tool in linux to recommend

Greetings,

i just port over to slackware and previously while i'm using opensuse 10.3, it come with a software package where it can encrypts file in my machine.

If i start the encryption tool in suse 10.3, what ever files i save to thumbdrive will be encrypt.

Does anyone can help me what is the name of the encrypt tool so i can find online to install on slackware because i do not want to install 10.3 just to see what is the tool.

I use encfs for encryption. There is a SlackBuild for it at slackbuilds.org. There are a couple dependencies (also available at slackbuilds.org), but I had no trouble installing them.

I used encfs on OpenSUSE 10.2 before I installed Slack 12.2 on my computer. I was able to retrieve the files encrypted under SUSE with no problems.

It's written from an installation on encrypted device point of view, but covers the steps needed quite well.

This is my 2nd try --

I have been using ccrypt to tar/encrypt files to a flash
drive. There is also a binary for M/S

sourceforge.net/projects/ccrypt

It is a clone of the old UNIX crypt, but with much
better encryption.

Truecrypt is also getting popular.
A Slackware package is available from slacky.eu, AFAIK.

It's flexible and portable, and can be used to en/decrypt files, partitions and disks. One advantage is that it exists for other platforms, too, but AFAIK LUKS encrypted devices can be decrypted and read under MS Windows, too.

I've been using TrueCrypt for years and have found it to be very easy to use and very powerful. It is a bit odd to set up on Linux, but it is worth it.
