What Is the best way to install KDE 4.2 on a clean Slackware 12.2 Install
I've installed Slackware 12.2 with a custom 2.6.28 kernel and I've install no desktop environments (Though X is installed) so I'm at a command line system.
What is the best way to install KDE 4.2 onto this installation as I've never installed an entire DE without using the packages provided on the Slackware DVD.
I'm assuming that you had an option to install KDE during the Linux install, and if so why didn't you just install it then? You would at least have a graphical interface. I can't remember, but I'm also assuming that the version you refer to is newer than the one that came with Slack. If you have options to download it or have it already, you can install it from the package that you have/get. Not enough info to know yet what else to tell you...
There are no KDE 4.2 packages for Slackware 12.2 available. KDE 3.5.10 is the best you can get.
What you will have to do if you really want KDE4, is compile all the KDE4 packages using the SlackBuild scripts and sources you can take from the slackware-current tree, as well as several other supporting packages that found their way into Slackware-current after 12.2 was released.
Yes KDE 4.2 is not included in Slack 12.2 and the reason I just installed a command line system was because of the fact I'm going to be installing KDE 4.2 if it's at all possible, there's no point of me installing KDE 3.5 if I'm going to wipe it out and replace it with a newer version.

Generally speaking, the packages in slackware-current can not be used on Slackware 12.2. If you want you can do a full upgrade to slackware-current.
That should not be too hard if you use slackpkg to do the job. Be sure to grab the version of slackpkg which is in slackware-current/slackware/ap because that knows the quirks of slackware-current package upgrade order. The slackpkg package from -current can be applied to slackware 12.2.
