What's With The Grumpyness?

Huh? Did I step on your toes,
or what? :)

I'm not grumpy. I'm very friendly
and docile, as a matter of fact.

If you are referring to the fact
that I told him that he could have
used the search, that's not grumpy.
That's sensible. What's the point in
"the oldtimers" using the search-engine
on behalf of n00bs?

I'm more than happy to discuss
"my grumpyness" if you please.

Cheers,
Tink

Heh ... not really ...
I thought I'd rather make a new
thread on "why tink is grumpy",
rather than have Kjetil hi-jack
this one and discuss my
attitude in a technical thread ;)

Cheers,
Tink

Ah, okay. I thought somehow you'd started a new thread when you meant to add a post. Good move on redirecting the off-topic stuff. I searched for that quote to see where the thread was but didn't turn up anything. Thanks for the link. (No, you didn't seem grumpy at all.)

Thanks ... I really *DO* love my little ethical
excursions every once in a while ;) but I
prefer to keep them seperate from tech
stuff ... that's also the reason that I, for
instance, didn't contribute techincal
feedback to that Paul Parr monster thread
in Linux-Newbie :}

Phhhhewwwww .. I was worried for
a sec ;)

When I first registered here, Tinkster was the first person who answered my question. He's also the first person I put on my Buddies List.

If this kind soul is grumpy, then I'm Evil Incarnate.

Ohh, and happy birthday hackers_

That style of replying has nothing to do with feeling superior, nor is it meant to put other people down. People SHOULD use the search function before asking. If no one tells them they should search, this forum will be flooded with questions that get asked over and over again.

People on these forums are kind enough to help others in their own free time, they don't get paid for it, they don't receive anything in return, except maybe a "thank you". I don't think it is too much to ask to search before you ask.

Questions that are repeated over and over are very annoying. If someone replies to your question with a simple "rtfm" or "use the search function", they are not putting you down, they are in fact helping you solve your problem. So if someone tells you to rtfm or stfw, don't feel offended, it's just a way of giving advice. A bit rough maybe, but it's definitely valuable advice.

So no, Kjetil4455, this n00b does not agree. In fact I totally agree with Tinkster and his way of answering questions.

I don't think we need any further evidence of who's got an attitude problem.

Tinkster has a downright frightening knowledge of Linux, and on this forum he shares it all for free. Furthermore; when Tink tells someone to use the search function or suchlike, he certainly does it in a more friendly way than I would (feel like doing). I'm absolutely convinced that the two best pieces of advice a newbie can get is "RTFM" and "STFW". If one does not learn how to find information oneself, how could one ever advance and work independently? Furthermore, if one asks a question on a forum without bothering to search for the answer before posting, I consider that to be a bit of an insult, since it translates to "hey, I want the answers, and I want YOU to do all the work for me!".

And to suggest that Tink is a forum participant in order to feel superior to people who knows less than himself...well, IMHO that's just plain stupid. Tinkster has helped me, and a lot (technical term: a shitload) of other people...I believe that people's appreciation is a better reward than just "feeling superior" all on your own, and I also believe that Tinkster sees it this way. So, as the n00b I happen to be, I completely disagree with you. But that's probably because I really want to learn stuff.

So, my ...keep up the good work, Tink. You're not grumpy.

This little fella needs to have his mouth washed out with some Lava soap. Seems to be a few of them around lately.

He's got similar posts all over LQ. Wait 'til Mommy and Daddy kick him out of the house and he has to earn his own living. His attitude will probably change when he's not spoon fed anymore.

Tink,

Thanks for the help in the past. Glad you're around and sharing what you've learned!

That's right, it is a forum page and you need to watch your mouth.. err, posts. What your doing is personally attacking another member which is uncalled for.

If you think Tinkster is bad, go thru some of my posts, I'm 100 times grumpier than Tinkster.

But this is an open forum, members here are helping others and poeple like you for free, out of their own spare time. Who cares if they tell you to go search. You should just be happy there are members here that do want to help you out, even if they do tell you to go search along with an answer or pointer to find your problem.

But let this be a verbal warning, no more posts like the one you posted. If you feel you still have a problem, feel free to email me or the site admin.

Regards.
