And how to install GNOME 2.4? Now I don't have a choice, I have to install this Desktop Environment.

When I try to download GNOME 2.4, I find that all are tar files, it is not possible that untar all of them and install right?

Does it have a install script or so? Or just like Dropline Gnome, I have a installer that I can download from the server and install it in a single process.

Thanks for help.

Thats not good.... I bet someone is going to be pissed... Installing Gnome is a freakin nightmare... I did it for my LFS install.... Not fun. You have to compile about 30 or 40 packages in a certain order. I had to do it for my LFS install.... Tho you would probably have alot of them installed already with Slack. One would think there should be a way to do it from the Slack CD..... Not sure.... It's my WM of choice so I always install it on the install... There is a new Gnome version that is supposed to do it for you.... Garnome . Might want to give that a try. I'm curious to try it out myself....

Anyone tries that Garnome before? Is it easy to handle?
I am afraid that I can't handle it since I am still a newbie.

Why not use the Gnome that comes on the 2nd CD of Slack 9.1?

I know, it's not as polished as DropLine...

Even me, i'm using DropLine right now... Hope it'll come back soon!!!!

Yes, Gnome 2.4 is on the 2 CD. You can just move to the dir and use

# pkgtool

Some problems with whoever was hosting them, I guess. in the meantime, you can use the google cache.

Just my 2 cents: I don't know what the problem is with Dropline, but there's no reason to postpone your upgrade because it's offline. I'd suggest just proceeding with your plans, and then upgrading to the latest Dropline when it returns.

BTW, assuming you are using a reasonably recent version of Dropline, the full set of packages you originally d/l'd are probably still cached in your /var directory. I don't recall the exact directory name off the top of my head, but it's something approximately like /var/dropline/cache You might want to check there to see if you've already got the packages you'd be downloading. -- J.W.
