weird "gone no logout" in wtmp

I searched a lot on forums for an answer but no luck!

When I logout from the console (tty1-6) I sometimes get a "gone - no logout" message in wtmp and the user is not removed from utmp...

mike pts/3 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Thu Mar 15 21:32 - 21:33 (00:00)
mike pts/3 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Thu Mar 15 21:29 - 21:31 (00:02)
mike tty1 Thu Mar 15 21:19 - 21:24 (00:05)
mike pts/3 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Thu Mar 15 21:05 - 21:29 (00:24)
mike pts/2 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Thu Mar 15 20:55 - 15:03 (4+18:07)
mike vc/1 Thu Mar 15 20:28 gone - no logout
mike pts/2 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Thu Mar 15 20:21 - 20:27 (00:05)

It never happen when I log on with SSH, only from the console. I have Slackware 11.0 installed with kernel 2.6.19 I compiled.

I would greatly appreciate input on this!

Thanks

Mike

Would the same user be logged in on another console perhaps?

Thank you for the response.

Even if nobody else is logged in (console or ssh), I could get this error...I rebooted my box, logged in using only tty1 and after a couple of tries I got the error back...

The only explanation I could think of is a process is running a script/command and it will use the vc/1 or virtual console, in other words console, to achieve the task it needs to perform and since it doesn't necessarily login (since root and system users can use the console), that's why you're seeing the gone, no logout message cause it never really logged in to begin with, since system users for processes and services don't have actual logins to the system to function properly.
