Webcams compatible with Slackware

Hey guys I am upgrading a few things this year with my tax return, mouse/keyboard, desk etc. I am wanting to buy a webcam to talk to my buddy in Korea and was wondering if you guys have any recommendations?

Thanks

Hi,

I have an Hercules Dualpix Exchange (Guillemot) and it is detected by Slackware 12.2 automatically. It is also supported by kopete and ekiga (take into account the advice here: http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?p...bcam%20support , regarding udev and v4l rules). I have not investigated if there are other 3rd party drivers which may improve performance.

I suppose Logitech webcams are also easily detected in Linux.

try for a uvc compliant cam...such as most logitechs....as you only need uvcvideo module (with luck)

My Logitech Quickcam Communicate Deluxe usb web camera works out of the box in Slackware 12.2.

I've noticed that a lot of these webcams have built in microphones, do the microphones also work in slackware?

Thanks.

Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000 works great with Slack 12.2

Hi, I bought a Logitech Quickcam E 3500 recently. It uses the uvc driver, and after loading the module both audio and video work flawlessly.

I recommend choosing a webcam from the supported uvc list: http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/
AlienBob has packages for the kernel module:
http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/linux-uvc/
But I think recent kernels don't require an external package anymore.

Please note that you can't go blindly on brand, for example some logitechs use a different driver or have a buggy hardware implementation.

The Logitech Quickcam Communicate Deluxe I mentioned above has a built-in microphone that works out of the box.

You should probably research which software webcameras use then pick supported webcam.
AFAIK, they are all based around "Video4Linux", and use few separate "drivers".
Following should be enough get started:
