VPN and Wireless Via Console

All,

My wireless is set up using ndiswrapper and wpa_supplicant. I've got my home wireless network and my schools wireless network in my /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, but I'm having trouble when I need to associate with an open wireless network after I have booted up. I do:
Code:

~ # ifconfig wlan0 up
~ # iwconfig wlan0 essid "ESSID"

This does not successfully associate with the open wireless network. What am I missing?

Also, what are my options for VPN on the console?

If you add the following to wpa_supplicant.conf that will tell it to connect to any open network when your defined networks aren't available.

network={
key_mgmt=NONE
priority=0
}

Thanks! That is helpful for when my computer boots up. But what if I would like to change my wireless network after I have already started my computer? I'm confused why iwconfig does not work.

iwconfig isn't working for you because you handed off control to wpa_supplicant (I've fought with it in the past).

I've found that wicd is a very handy tool for wireless connections (assuming of course you're running a GUI). It may be the solution you're looking for. It allows you to store connection profiles and make changes on the fly.
