VNC client

Hi,

I don't use VNC, but one of my clients needs it for his work and has asked me to install one for him. Can you recommend one particularly (which would eventually integrate nicely into KDE 4.10)?

You may already have vnc-viewer installed or you could check out Real VNC.

/usr/bin/krdc supports vnc and rdp.

I've been using krdc/krfb since the 3.5 days. Works fine and simple to use. Just beware of left-hand mouse usage: broken.

There is a VNC package (TigerVNC) in Slackware's "extra" section. Unfortunately it was built in the absense of a Java JDK so the java viewer was not built: the java viewer will be served via the VNCserver's builtin webserver (running at a userconfigurable port starting with 5800).

The standalone viewer (/usr/bin/vncviewer) in that package is fully functional by the way! I use it every day.

If you want a version which contains the Java classes required for a VNC server serving the cross-platform Java viewer on a web page, get it at http://slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/tigervnc/ instead.

I use TigerVNC as well, though I use 1.3.0, not the one in /extra which is 1.1.0. I don't really know what the differences are between the 2 versions though, I can't seem to find a changelog.

I use remmina with freerdp. It allows me to connect to a windows 2008 rdp server at work... both have a slackbuild available.

+1 for Remmina, but in most situations I use UltraVNC through Wine - it does not look pretty because of crappy font scaling, but it gives me file transfer and the ability to set colour palette to black/white, which is of much help when dealing with slow bandwith.

Edit - I forgot you mentioned KDE integration. In that case, krdc might be better than Remmina, but I still find UltraVNC superior.

Looks like I can finally upgrade my package to 1.3.0...

Code:

 - Full multi-head support.
 - Improved keyboard support in Xvnc.
 - Listen mode is back in both viewers.
 - SSH tunneling is back on Unix and in the Java viewer.
 - Edge/bump scrolling in full screen mode.
 - The viewers can now store and load settings.
 - Better full screen support in the Java viewer.
 - Dynamic resize of sessions as you resize the viewer.
 - Several performance improvements in the Java viewer.

Just to make things easier, to build TigerVNC 1.3.0 on 14.0 and 14.1 you need at least 2 patches (see upstream commits r5130 and r5135). Personally I had to use a third patch (essentially reverting commit r5077) in my own SlackBuild script, I don't know if it is my configure options or not, I haven't had time to look into the issue.

I read a little while back that one of the kde developers might have been working on getting freerdp to work with krdc and kde 4.11 to get NLA authentication to work. I'm not sure if it worked out or not.

turtleli, does the X clipboard work in both directions for you in a TigerVNC-1.3.0 viewer?

I built a package and if I connect the TigerVNC-1.3.0's vncviewer to a remote server (running an older tigervnc-1.1.0 server), I can select text inside the viewer and paste that text locally. But when I select some text on the local computer and try to paste that into the vncviewer to the remote end, it does not work.

From what I read this is an issue with fltk but I am using fltk-1.3.2 with all the patches applied which are mentioned in the TigerVNC's BUILDING.txt file.

The answer is yes, but it seems to depend on how it's built.

By chance and sheer laziness, I had TigerVNC-1.3.0 packages on 2 laptops (one Slackware64-14.1, one Slackware-14.0) built using two different SlackBuild scripts. Script 1 has a vncviewer which links to a shared fltk library. Script 2 has a vncviewer which links in a static fltk library. With script 1 packages, the clipboard works both ways. With script 2 packages, the clipboard only works from remote to local. If you want, I can provide you with my scripts or just the relevant vncviewer related parts for comparison.

(On another note, maybe we should discuss this on another thread or by email so the thread stays on topic?)
