Visual inconsistencies in KDE 4.8 / Slackware 14.0

Guys,

Freshly installed Slackware 14.0, KDE 4.8.5, stock kernel 3.2.29.
Graphic card is plain in-built Intel GM, nothing fancy.

I've been observing couple visual inconsistencies in some KDE apps since I installed Slackware 14.0. The drop down menu box won't randomly appear broken. See example of Kwrite app and the broken drop down menu :-

Attachment 11050

And this issue remains with most(all) of the apps.

Another issue is with default Audacious 3.3.1. While I set it up like the old good Winamp classic style as in player+equalizer+playlist all together and works fine. However when I click on the system tray icon to hide it and show it back, the player or playlist gets separated. It's minor but annoying. Please see the screenshots :-

Before

After
Attachment 11052

Please note, I have experienced this same behavior with any of the themes, with or without Desktop effects enabled, with openGL or xrendr, I mean the glitch is there no matter what.

Anybody else has experienced the similar annoyance? Any help or suggestion would be highly appreciated.

PS: I'll be upgrading to AlienBOB's KDE 4.9.2 in some time to see if the issue is specifically with KDE 4.8.5 or something else.

Regards.

Hi,

I think a cannot really help here because I'm not running KDE anymore. But here are some suggestions.

I would not recommend to upgrade to 4.9 before you've found out what's reason for your issues with KDE. Probably some other Slackers here have a similar setup (same graphics-adapter and KDE) and can share their experiences.

I had some issues with KDE 4 when I once used it. One cause for trouble was (as I assume) that I used my old configurations after an Upgrade. How about you? did you configure KDE from stock after you upgraded to Slackware-14? or did you adapt the old configuration?
If the latter is the case, I would recommend (probably with a new useraccount) to configure KDE from stock and find out if the issues remain the same.

As for the issues with non-KDE-applications, I would recommend to test them in another Windowmanager in order to find out if it really depends on KDE.

Hi Markush,

Thanks for replying.
I didn't upgrade from 13.37 but installed fresh 14.0 32-bit from scratch. In my 13.37 machine I used Alien's KDE 4.6.5 and never had such issue.
I've tried deleting ~.kde twice and configuring from scratch but same issue re-appears. I've put on hold upgrading to KDE 4.9.2 for some time to see if I get some more suggestions(or lack of).

Regards.

Update : I've just tested and established that none of these 2 issues exists in XFCE 4.10. All looks smooth and crisp as expected.
So I think this must be a glitch with KDE 4.8.5 like the two tiny launcher bugs on a fresh install.

However I'd wait for other users responses on this before try upgrading to KDE 4.9.2.

Regards.

I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions about the corrupted drop-down.

As for the window positioning, I can't be sure as I'm not in front of my Linux machine, but I believe that KWin has lots of settings available for window-specific positioning, etc. Perhaps it's worth playing with those a little. I think you can get to them by right clicking on the titlebar or something like that.

Thanks Dave.

Update : I removed a couple external themes and 2 splash screens I installed from kde-looks and finally deleted ~.kde AND this seems to have resolved the issue for now in KDE. The drop down in any KDE app doesn't break down now and Audacious stays as expected. Yay!
However, I'm not marking this thread as solved, I'll be observing this for couple of days more.

Still I believe that this KDE version in 14.0 is buggier than before.

Regards.
