I've installed
VirtualBox 4.0.4 in Slackware 13.1 64-bit from
VirtualBox-4.0.4-70112-Linux_amd64.run, the extensions from
Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.0.4-70112.vbox-extpack (yes, you
do need this) and the
Guest Additions for each virtual machine (
Win-XP and
Win-7 in my case).
I'm happy to report that, unlike the initial version 4.0.x,
TurboTax did not get wiped out and it along with everything else in an existing
Win-XP installation works just fine.
A new install of 64-bit
Win-7 requires a couple of things that aren't readily apparent: if you have a processor capable of virtualization before you start a an existing or add a new virtual machine, you really do need to
- Enable IO APIC (on the System menu)
- Enable Use host I/O cache (on the Storage menu -- for both types of controller; i.e., SATA and IDE, if you use a SATA drive for virtual machine storage)
You may want to
- Enable OSS Audio Driver if you don't get any sound with the ALSA driver
After installing VirtualBox, the USB boxes were all grayed-out and I had to edit
/etc/rc.S to comment-out this section
Code:
# This is commented-out for VirtualBox
# Mount usbfs:
#if grep -wq usbfs /proc/filesystems; then
# if ! grep -wq usbfs /proc/mounts ; then
# if ! grep -wq usbfs /etc/fstab; then
# /sbin/mount -v usbfs /proc/bus/usb -t usbfs
# else
# /sbin/mount -v /proc/bus/usb
# fi
# fi
#fi
so
VirtualBox could use the USB ports (printer, flash-drives and the like). This is with further thanks to @szob in this thread
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...ut-usb-856080/.
Anyway,
VirtualBox 4.0.4 appears to have cleaned up prior problems with, for example,
TurboTax (kind of seasonal, that) and, as far as I can tell, things work just fine.
Hope this helps some.
[EDIT]
Yeah, I know if fumble-fingered 64-bit to 54-bit and I can't figure out how to change the subject line to fix that. Mumble, grumble.
