virtual terminal text garbled after startx with fglrx install

hi all,

i have the following problem:
after installing amd catalyst drivers (versions 11.7 or 11.8) the text in the virtual terminals becomes garbled AFTER startx. screenshot attached.
the terminals keep working - the screenshot was taken with fbgrab from tty2.

the system is: hp probook 4515s, integrated radeon 4200 hd gpu, slackware64 13.37 multilib with stock generic kernels 2.6.37.6 and 2.6.38.4 (from testing).

this happens with or without multilib, with stock or testing mesa and libdrm on both kernels. it does the same on stock salix64 13.37.
the problem does not appear on centos 6, mint debian, opensuse 11.4, fedora 15 (all 64bit).

i have searched for this kind of issue, but 'reset' does not work and reinstalling everything (os, drivers, etc...) does not work either. that's what i found until now.

any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
doomey

Try booting with 'vga=normal' as an option to the kernel.

After installing the fglrx driver did you disable the in-kernel radeon driver which I believe would still load on boot.

Inserting the line

blacklist radeon

into the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file would do the necessaries.

jonny, thank you!
yes, this appears to have been the problem. it's strange since i never had to do that before on slackware or any other distro that i had tried.
well, just another thing to add to the installation instructions.

again, thank you jonny!
