viewing jpeg images in kde
This is what happens when I don't take notes.
I am having a problem setting up in KDE to view jpeg images in kde-3.4.92 on a 10.2 box. I can't remember this problem in prvious versions of slack/kde Saturday I could not get jpegs to preview as icons in konqueror and kuickshow would not load them for viewing on my workstation. Fiddling around I did something which gave me the previews and kuickshow was working again. Tonight I tried to get the problem resolved on my daughter's desktop and I can't seem to figure out how I did it on the weekend. If anyone else has had this problem I'd be very interested in how you sorted it out. TIA |
Perhaps it has to do with the preview option, when you first started KDE, it makes you go through a configuration wizard, on how KDE will do certain things, like if you want windows or mac-like keyboard shortcuts, mouse behavior, window styles. Try re-running that wizard again, I think it is under the utilities section, dig around there, I can't remember off the top of my head, and Im not in windows right now, since Im not at home. There should be a point in the wizard where you come to a section on what KDE will do, like have sound effects, windows effects, and there should be an option there to enable to preview files such as images, text, etc. I KNOW it has to be there, just sorry that I sound so vague, but again, I know for a fact it has to be in the configuration wizard of KDE.

Thanks for the reply. You can get to the Desktop Configuration wizard from Settings in the main menu.
However, I've been there already and played around to no avail. I think it is either something to do with mime types and/or the qt library paths which can be modified with qtconfig. I remember fiddling with both of these on my box. There seems to be a problem with recognising and/or processing jpegs. For example, on my box, in konqueror, when the pointer is placed over the image icon a popup appears listing file type/size/etc. This does not occur now in her PC. I'll probably ssh over my ~/.kde tonight and see what happens when I substitute it for the existing. At least I'll be able to narrow down the problem if everything is ok with my kde configs. |
try Settings> Configure Konqueror go to Behavior tab and check "Show file tips" and "Show previews in file tips"

I have a similar question. In KDE the picture previews work fine for low resolution images, ie 1280x960. However, previews fail to load for images that were taken with a 5MP camera (2560x1920?). Would appreciate any ideas that anyone can think of. Thanks.

yuchai, this probably happens because your high quality images are >1MB in size. KDE is usually set to show previews for images <1MB only for performance reasons.
you can increase the file size in the control center >> KDE components >> File Manager >> Previews & Meta-Data stimpy |
