VIA AGP Driver
 

Hi, just updated my motherboard for a standalone PVR box running Freevo. Having a clean install of 10.2, was about to start tweaking but noticed that the AGPGART module fails to load as it does not detect the KM400A (VT8378) chipset. Had a peak at the source and there is no section relating to this.

Had a look at the VIA site, but not too much help there, particularly as I have no intention of using the on-board graphics. Has any one patched the agpgart module with success, or is there a Via-agp driver out there that I can use instead?

If the your video card is an NVidia one, you don't need the kernel's agpgart. The NVidia driver can use its own.

Sure, the module is called via_agp, I think you need to configure and
compile your kernel to enable it

No luck resolving this, however, I have found source for agpgart v2.0 at freedesktop.org, and have retrieved this with CVS. However, I am now stuck in newbie land, not knowing what to do now to get it copmpiled. Have tried inserting it into the kernel source tree, but the compile errors, and had no luck compiling in the download directory. Pointers here would be appreciated :)

Im using via_agp modules that is included in the 2.6.14 kernel and it loads just fine:

Linux agpgart interface v0.101 (c) Dave Jones
agpgart: Detected VIA KM400/KM400A chipset
agpgart: AGP aperture is 128M @ 0xd0000000

what does " modprobe via-agp " ( as root ) give you... ?

Okay, I have done some experimenting. Upgraded to the 2.6.13 kernel, used my custom config file and recompiled accordingly. All fine, including the afore mentioned v0.101 apgart driver. This loads two modules agpgart and the via agp, which is different to the 0.9 version, which has all the various chipsets in the one module.

There is stuff in 2.6 I like, some stuff that has proven tricky, so here's the question; if I have to revert to the 2.4 kernel, can I simply copy the code from one source tree to the other?
